The great dichotomy that defines most modern political ideological debates is Freedom vs Security. The child in me yearns for greater security, but the adult in me knows that freedom is the right answer. The dilemma exists when we realize that individual failure is a possibility when we pursue freedom first, because it besets us much quicker and fiercer than the collective failure that we risk when our highest priority is security. At some level, collective security is much more self serving since the consequences are shared. A society whose end game is freedom ensures that more of its participants will prosper, even if you don’t.
